Surface Preparation

The essential step to a successful epoxy resin flooring installation is the preparation of the substrate. Prior to application of the flooring system we mechanically prepare all surfaces. This method of preparation is the best and most effective way to remove any weak, loose and/or friable laitance from the surface. Whilst also providing a mechanical ‘key’ for the resin coating to adhere to. With vacuum assistance on each machine, it is a 95% dust free operation. Our installation teams are experienced and trained in using state-of-the-art machinery. This includes handheld grinders for small intricate areas or where ‘edging’ may be required.

Failure to Prepare

The purpose of correct surface preparation is to create a substrate that will promote mechanical adhesion by removing all contaminants and laitance. Poor preparation can lead to coating failure characterised through peeling, chips and cracks. Which can be a trip hazard and a magnet for dust, bacteria, and dirt not to mention costly repair works.

Most Commonly Used Floor Preparation Methods

Diamond Grinding: Diamond grinding is the most common and highly efficient method to restore concrete flooring. It is also used to prepare it for a new resin flooring system. The machines known as diamond grinders have horizontal rotating discs with diamond tipped saw blades which, as the disc spin, the blades clean, level and restore the concrete surface correcting irregularities such as minor divots and pits. Our diamond grinding machines have built-in vacuum extraction to ensure a virtually dust free operation.

Shot Blasting: Shot blasting is a method that blasts the concrete surface with small steel balls at high velocity and is mainly used to remove contamination and previously laid epoxy, polyurethane and methyl methacrylate coatings. Shot blasting gives a textured surface and produces very little airborne dust.
