Wimbledon is the most famous tennis venue in the World and Robex have carried out a number of contracts on-site over the last 20 years. The last major project at The All England Club was the new roof added to No 1 Court. In addition to this, other upgrades to the stadium were made. The original resin floor coating was applied when the court opened in 1997 and naturally was looking in poor condition. Robex submitted a quote to complete the new epoxy flooring installation. To prepare and coat the upper and lower concourses including re-cutting various expansion joints and installing a new joint.

Materials used

RXEP Hi-Build 500 was fully blinded using a 0.4 – 0.8 aggregate – the joints were filled with a single pack flexible jointing compound.

Work undertaken

The surface had to have extensive preparation and in the main, this was carried out using one of our largest floor preparation machines fitted with vacuum extraction. All joints had to be re-cut and various grills were prepared by hand. A water-based epoxy primer was used and then the first coat of RXEP Hi-Build 500 was applied and fully blinded with a quartz aggregate. Once the coating has dried all the excess aggregate was removed and a further coat of RXEP Hi-Build 500 was applied. All joints were then reinstated.

Challenges

The work started in February and it turned out to be one of the wettest months on record and this caused numerous issues. Following this, Covid 19 meant that the contract was suspended for three months after which we were able to return to the site to complete the project.

Outcome

A new epoxy flooring installation for the refurbished No 1 Court and everyone was delighted with the results. Unfortunately, it will be 2021 at the earliest before the new floor will be used by the public.
